Parts of Speech

বাক্যের অন্তর্গত প্রত্যেকটি শব্দকে Parts of Speech বা পদ বলে। যেমন-

You play cricket with your friends.
এখানে you, play, cricket, with, your, friends প্রত্যেকটি শব্দই একেকটি Part of Speech.

Kinds of Parts of Speech (পদের প্রকারভেদ)
There are eight kinds of Parts of Speeches in English language. They are-

1. Noun (বিশেষ্য)
2. Pronoun (সর্বনাম)
3. Adjective (বিশেষণ)
4. Verb (ক্রিয়া)
5., Adverb (ক্রিয়া বিশেষণ)
6. Preposition (পদান্বয়ী অব্যয়)
7. Conjunction (সংযোজক অব্যয়)
8. Interjection (আবেগসূচক অব্যয়)


1. Noun (বিশেষ্য)
Nouns are the names of people, places, things or feelings. Actually, names of any sort of things are noun. Nouns are used as the subjects or objects in a sentence. (ব্যক্তি, স্থান, জিনিস, আবেগ ইত্যাদির নামকে ইংরেজিতে Noun বলে। একটি বাক্যের Subject অথবা Object হিসাবে Noun বাক্যে ব্যবহৃত হয়।)

Some examples of nouns are- Jony, Rebeca, boy, girl, city, cow, tree, paper, mango, orange, beauty, honesty etc.

2. Pronoun (সর্বনাম)
The word used as a substitute for a noun is called a noun. Pronouns are also used as the subjects or objects in a sentence. (Noun এর পরিবর্তে যে সকল শব্দ ব্যবহৃত হয়, তাদেরকে Pronoun বলে।)

Some examples of pronouns are- I, we, you, he, she, they, us, ourselves, your, their, them etc.

3. Adjective (বিশেষণ)
The word or words that describe, identify, or quantify a noun or pronoun is an adjective. Usually, adjectives take place before noun or at the end of the sentence. (যে সকল শব্দ Noun বা Pronoun কে বিশেষিত করে, তাদেরকে Adjective বলে। Adjective সাধারণত Noun এর পূর্বে এবং বাক্যের শেষে বসে।)

Some examples of the adjectives are- good, honest, lovely, nice, cold, hot, soft, hard etc.

4. Verb (ক্রিয়া)
The word or words expressing action, a state of being, or a happening is called a verb. A verb forms the main part of a predicate. Generally, verbs take places after noun or pronoun. (ইংরেজিতে কোনো কিছু করা, হওয়া বা থাকাকে Verb বলে। Verb সাধারণত বাক্যে Noun বা Pronoun এর পরে বসে।)

Some examples of verbs are- go, eat, take, know, feel, run, read, is, have, see, cook, wash etc.

5. Adverb (ক্রিয়া বিশেষণ)
The word that modifies a verb, an adjective, another adverb or a phrase or a clause is called an adverb. In general, adverbs take places after verb, before adjectives or another adverb. (যে শব্দ Verb, Adjective, Adverb অথবা শব্দগুচ্ছ কিংবা বাক্যাংশকে বিশেষিত করে, তাকে ইংরেজিতে Adverb বলে। Adverb সাধারণত বাক্যে Verb এর পরে, Adjective এর পূর্বে অথবা অপর একটি Adverb এর পূর্বে বসে।)

Some examples of adverbs are- slowly, fast, very, generally, hardly, tremendously, usually etc.

6. Preposition (পদান্বয়ী অব্যয়)
The word or words that links nouns, pronouns, and phrases to other words in a sentence is called a preposition. Generally, prepositions take places before noun and pronoun. But, sometimes it takes places at the end of the sentence or before verb. (যে সকল শব্দ Noun বা Pronoun এর পূর্বে বসে এর অবস্থান নির্দেশ করে, তাদেরকে Preposition বলে। Preposition সাধারণত Noun বা Pronoun এর পূর্বে বসে। তবে, কখনো কখনো Preposition বাক্যের শেষে অথবা Verb এর পূর্বে বসে।)

Some common prepositions are- to, at, of, on, in, up, over, above, among, between, around, into, under etc.

7. Conjunction (সংযোজক অব্যয়)
The word or words that are used to link one word to another, one phrase to another, one clause to another. (দুই বা ততোধিক শব্দ, শব্দগুচ্ছ কিংবা বাক্যাংশকে যুক্ত করতে যে শব্দ ব্যবহৃত হয়, তাকে ইংরেজিতে Conjunction বলে। Conjunction সাধারণত যে শব্দ, শব্দগুচ্ছ বা বাক্যাংশগুলোকে যুক্ত করছে, তাদের মাঝখানে বসে।)

Some commonly used conjunctions are- and, or, so, as, because, for, but, what, that, who etc.

8. Interjection (আবেগসূচক অব্যয়)
Interjections are the word or words that are added to the sentences to express emotion. Usually, interjections take places at the beginning of the sentences. (আকস্মিক আবেগ বুঝাতে যে সকল শব্দ বাক্যে ব্যবহৃত হয়, তাদেরকে ইংরেজিতে Interjection বলে। Interjection সাধারণত বাক্যের প্রথমে ব্যবহৃত হয়।)

Some common examples of interjections are- Aha! Hello! Wow! Hurray! Gosh! Nice! Blimey! Ouch! Hmm! etc.
